미국세무사시험은 세법만 3과목으로 나누어 시험을 치룹니다.
각과목 100문항 객관식으로 이루어져 있습니다.
세무사 시험에 합격하면 세무전문가로 인정받아 굴지의 세무회계법인에서 세무파트에서 일을 할 수있고, 국세청에서 일을 할 수도 있습니다. 회계사무실은 물론이고 플루덴셜과 같은 재정전문회사나 부동산 및 보험등의 업무에서도 요긴하게 사용할 수가 있습니다. 기존 세무회계하는 분들은 시험 합격후 분명 신분이나 급여상승이 이루어집니다.
시험 합격후 즉시 개업도 가능합니다. 세무회계사무실를 개업할 수 있습니다. 
미 연방 Federal regulation증의 하나인 Treasury Department Circular 230에 따르면 제 10조 3항에 Who may Practice?라는 제목으로 미국에서 누가 납세 대리업무를 할 수 있느냐를 명시하고 있습니다.
(a) Attorney. (중략)
(b) Certified public accountants. .
(c) Enrolled agents. Any individual enrolled as an agent pursuant to this part
who is not currently under suspension or disbarment from practice before the
Internal Revenue Service may practice before the Internal Revenue Service.
위의 (c)에서 언급하는 Enrolled Agents가 공인세무사 입니다

또한 우리가 세무감사을 받고나서 감사결과 통지서와 함께보내주는 Publication 5 "Your Appeal Right"에는 감사 결과에 대한 불복시에 다음 누구를 대리인으로 선임하여 의의신청을 할 수있는지 다음과 같이 규정하고 있습니다.
Representation
You may represent yourself at your appeals conference, or you may have an attorney, certified public accountant, or an individual enrolled to practice before the IRS represent you.
Your representative must be qualified to practice before the IRS.

또한 미국세청은 납세대리인(Practitioner)을 다음 자격소지자로 규정하고 있다.
Who are Circular 230 Practitioners?
There are three types of practitioners: Attorney, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Enrolled Agent.
Attorney means any person who is a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, including a Commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
Certified public accountant (CPA) means any person who is duly qualified to practice as a certified public accountant in any State, territory, or possession of the United States, including a Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Enrolled agent means any person who has earned the privilege of practicing or representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. Enrolled agents, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), are unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle, and before which IRS offices they can practice.
